SKI CRASH UPDATE
Last Monday, as part of my One Million Vertical Foot Challenge, I took one of the worst falls of my skiing career. It's my own damn fault for not keeping my skis tuned better. I washed out on a high speed GS turn, caught an edge and flipped violently onto my leg and then face.
After the crash, I tasted salty warm blood dripping off my face and mouth, while I lay there wondering if I had broken my leg or, worse, my neck, which was throbbing with angry pain. I was then evaluated by Heavenly Valley Ski Patrol who recommended I be splinted and transported to Barton Memorial Hospital. The Patrol also told me I was seriously injured and my skiing days were probably over, at least for this year. Considering that my knee was totally unstable and I could not put any pressure at all on it, their diagnosis made sense. However, I felt that I had not fractured any bones and I was wary of placing myself in the hands of conventional medical doctors, so I decided I wanted a second opinion, first.
I refused treatment, signed off on their waivers and had a friend drive me to see my chiropractor instead. Fortunately, he was able to determine I had no fractures. Then he give me a great deal of relief with my badly sprained neck and told me to come back the next day, to see if the swelling in my knee had gone down and he could then evaluate the damage.
By the next day, things were not nearly so grim.
"THIS JUST ISN'T POSSIBLE. YOU'RE 63 AND YET YOU ARE HEALING LIKE A 25 YEAR OLD," said my chiropractor after he examined me the following day. My assistant, Damen Tesch, was with me when Dr. David Borges, D.C told me he expected me to be much worse by the second day, not already healing and walking around.
"Obviously, you were preloaded with a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine and the results are unbelievable," said Dr. Borges, who is aware I am a medical cannabis patient and advocate.
I still have a ways to go, but Dr. Borges says could be skiing again in as soon as two weeks from now. That's great news, because I still hope to celebrate my 35th year of surviving cancer with cannabis, by skiing one million vertical feet. So far, I've completed 150,000 vertical feet, so I still have a good chance of completing my goal, even with a period of recovery from my current injuries.
Dr. Borges also agreed with me that my daily use of EFA rich hemp oil has resulted in extraordinary elasticity and strength of my tendons and ligaments, which should have torn, considering the forces involved and my age.
Needless to say, I have been making liberal use of my lozenges to successfully treat my injuries and I am even more enthusiastic than ever about them.
